One of the coolest developments to happen over the last few months is my relationship with Driss, a local photographer. We met last year when I was developing 20+ photos for my exhibition (he also owns and runs a local photo store). Apparently one of his assistants thought that my work was his work. So when Driss walked into his shop one day, his assistant said “I love these photos of yours…they’re some of your best work.” Driss was intrigued and asked to see which ones….well they weren’t his shots but mine. So he made sure to be there when I came in to pick them up so we could meet….and since then we’ve seen each other every few days.
In addition to running a photo shop Driss is also a much sought after commercial photographer and spends most weeks traveling back and forth from Meknes to Marrakech, Casablanca, and Rabat. About a month ago I expressed interest in going on some shoots with him and he asked if I would be interested in serving as his assitant on shoots in the area….and of course I said YES!
So over the last few weeks we’ve done two shoots together. One for a magazine cover for a well-known national magazine and the other last night at a local restaurant. I do a host of things at the shoots….set-up all lighting and manage lighting, serve as camera tech (prepping camera, changing lenses) and assist with shoot set-up and positioning. It’s not only been fun but it’s also been an amazing time of learning….watching how he thinks….studying camera and light settings…seeing how he interacts with clients. I can’t wait to see what we get to do next!
